Author Guidelines
Submission Procedure
Contributions must be submitted via the journal's administration system (not by e-mail). To do so, please create an account at https://bop.unibe.ch/index.php/judaica/user/register. After you have logged in, you can submit your contribution.
Peer review process
We use double blind peer review, i.e., neither reviewers nor authors know each other’s identity. Therefore, please remove all indications of your identity from your article. Information on authorship can be entered in the journal administration system during the submission process and therefore does not have to be entered in the submitted text file. Make sure that the metadata of the submitted PDF files does not contain any information that might identify you as the author. (If you use MS Word: File->Export->Create PDF/XPS document->Options, under “Include non-printable information” remove the check mark in front of “Document properties”.)
Language
German, French, American English, British English.
Abstract & Keywords
Articles should be accompanied by a summary in English and some keywords
File formats
For peer review, a PDF file is sufficient. For accepted contributions, an editable file in one of the following formats must be submitted: DOCX, ODT, Markdown.
Manuscript preparation
As a general rule:
Formatting should be kept as simple as possible and serves only to help distinguish the different elements. Only italics are used for emphasis, primarily for fixed terms and for book titles. Do not use the following elements:
- Emphasis by underlining or boldface (except to indicate headings)
- Blank lines between paragraphs
- indents by tabs or spaces
Fonts
Use common fonts in standard font sizes. In general, and also for non-Latin writing systems, use Unicode fonts (for example, SBL Greek for Greek and SBL Hebrew for Hebrew).
Headings
As a rule, no more than 3 outline levels should be used. Use the styles of your word processor for the headings.
Quotation marks
Make sure to use typographic quotation marks, also known as “smart” or “curly” quotation marks as opposed to straight quotation marks: “double quotation marks”; ‘single quotation marks’.
Blockquotes
Quotes longer than 5 lines are placed without quotation marks in their own paragraph and indented on both sides.
Hyphens and Dashes
Make sure that you use hyphens and en dashes and em dashes correctly according to the Chicago Manual of Style.
Images
Do not include images in the text file, but deliver them in separate files. The desired placement of the images is indicated by a note in the following form: [[Here: image1.jpg; Caption: Caption]]. Use pictures in the best possible quality in JPG or TIF/TIFF format and make sure you have the necessary permissions.
Tables
Do not create tables using tabs, but with the appropriate function of your word processor. Avoid unnecessary formatting of the tables (for example, cell shading, background color).
Transliteration
If you choose to transliterate languages that do not use the Latin alphabet, please adhere to the guidelines listed in the SBL Handbook of Style.
Source documentation
JNDF uses the “notes and bibliography system” according to the Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition). For a good overview, see the following Web pages:
Please note the following additional requirements:
- Use shortened citations throughout, i.e., already in the first note mentioning a source. Don’t use “Ibid.”, and don’t omit the title of a work if you cite the same source repeatedly.
- Contrary to CMoS 14.110, introductions, prefaces, afterwords, etc., should be cited as any other chapter in a book:
- Cite: Pinker, Steven. “Introduction.” In What is Your Dangerous Idea?, edited by John Brockman, xxiii-xxxiii. New York: Harper Perennial, 2007.
- Instead of: Pinker, Steven. Introduction to What is Your Dangerous Idea?, edited by John Brockman, xxiii-xxxiii. New York: Harper Perennial, 2007.
- Reference Works
- Cite authored entries like a regular chapter in a book.
- Cite other reference entries in the following manner: Reference Work, s.v. „Entry Title“.
In the bibliography, include full publication details of the reference work as a whole.
For articles in German or French please also consult the corresponding guidelines.
Abbreviations
Abbreviations are used for the following sources: Bible, the Qumran scriptures, Rabbinical and Jewish-Hellenistic literature. No abbreviations are used for titles of secondary sources, for series and journal titles. Use the abbreviations given in the SBL Handbook of Style (2nd edition).
